UGATRA

...stands for "Uganda Austria Transfer", which was an art education project for secondary school pupils co-developed and co-executed between Art students/graduates from the Margaret Trowell School for Industrial and Fine Arts at the Makerere University in Kampala/Uganda and from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna/Austria.

The objective of UGATRA was to initiate and support an exchange between different cultures and age groups which should help to get to know and understand each other better, to learn from each other and to get inspired by each other through art workshops in the field of Textile/Animation/Computer.

Project start in early 2006

It took quite a while until UGATRA was ready to start.

The project minutes can be read at: news-preparation-phase

In February 2008 UGATRA took place in Uganda

31.Jan - 2.Feb.2008 Art Workshop at the Mengo Senior School in Kampala
11 - 15.Feb.2008 Art Workshop at the SOS Children's Village School in Kakiri
20.Feb.2008, 6PM Presentation & Exhibition at Ugandan German Cultural Society / Goethe Zentrum, 62 Bukoto Street, Kamwokya, Kampala
20 - 22.Feb.2008 Subsequent exhibition at UGCS / Goethe Zentrum

This second phase of Ugatra was a demanding, impressive and beautiful experience for all of the participants!

For impressions, have a look at news-ugatra-in-uganda-2008

In March 2008 the preparations for UGATRA in Austria started

The preparations got pretty far. In 2009-09 one Ugandan project member, Lydia Alowo, plus the Ugandan institutional partner and mentor, Dr. George Keyune, came to Austria for the project assessment. UGATRA in Austria should have taken place in 2009-Spring. But as this was already a postponed date too far and unseizable in the future for some, and as the Ugandan project team had problems of trust within, and as the whole transcultural project team while UGATRA in Uganda 2008 has gone through an interesting but on the other side quite challenging and hence demanding time, which stressed some interpersonal relationships, the last planned phase, UGATRA in Austria, could eventually not take place! In January 2009 the project was officially closed.

The future after the project end

UGATRA in its original personal composition will not continue, its members agreed. But the developed project can be used as a model by other people, and possibly the link between the 2 universities, which have originally participated, grows strong enough, so that following projects and exchanges can emerge, and others can benefit of a link and the grassroots development's idea, which was originally started by UGATRA!
