UGATRA - Ugandan Austrian Transfer

a Transcultural Project in Arts and Education

Involved partners

  • Students from the University of Applied Arts Vienna (7 students)
  • Students from the Makerere University (definitive participants after assessment trip)
  • Supporting universities (University of Applied Arts Vienna, Makerere University in Kampala)
  • Supporting cultural initiatives
  • Ugandan and Austrian secondary schools

Introduction

The aim of this transcultural project is to develop and carry out an educational art project for secondary

school pupils in Uganda and Austria, that - within the artistic process in a workshop situation – initiates

and supports an exchange of knowledge and experience, of skills and aesthetics, of views and visions

between all people involved.

The substances, the medias, and the didactic framework of the workshops, later held in the schools,

will be developed from both studentgroups in contact with their institutions and partners involved. The

project proposal will be based on the results of the assessment trip in August / September 2007 and will

build up on the individual artistic and educational competences of each student, focussing the needs and

interests of the partnerschools, their pupils and teachers.

The idea of investigation, exchange and transfer arises from the serious interest in each other and in the

social and cultural dimensions of the world we live in. In this sense this transcultural project is meant to

have various platforms of exchange and learning:

  • The academic platform
  • The school platform
  • The community platform
  • The cultural platform

Timeline

Since 2006:

Preparation Phase

Set up of contact between Austrian and Ugandan students, initiated by an Ugandan student, studying art education in Austria at the University of Applied Arts.
Set up of working groups in both countries.
Getting university support
Looking for schoolpartners
April - May 2007: Intensive Mentoring Intensive mentoring through Prof. Barbara Putz-Plecko and Design Consultant Lidwina Dox
Concept Finalisation: The workshop at the school starts with a collective architectural activity "Creation of recycled workspace" where students and pupils will get to know each other. We will build an outdoor weather protective workspace from freely availably materials, i.e: plastic waste, natural materials, etc. After having built "our own environment" we will use it as our workspace. The workshop continues in 4 modules, dedicated to certain topics and techniques. Pupils will take part in one of the specific modules, but at all time share one common workspace, to encourage exchange and synergy. Goal of the modules are finished workpieces. The workshop end will be a presentation and celebration.
August - September 2007: Assessment Trip 3 Austrian students go to Kampala for an assessment for about 5 weeks. Meet the involved partners, get to know them personally, presenting the prepared workshop modules, jointly develop/adjust the modules, perform necessary research in situ, and eventually come to a common agreement for the final project proposal.
Late September 2007:

Partner Agreement

Prof. Barbara Putz-Plecko of the University of Applied Arts offers to phone the institutiona projectpartners in Uganda and further discuss and develop the project‘s framework. If necessary she can come to Kampala.
October - December 2007 Detailed planning in each country.
January 2008:

Coming together in Uganda

Joining the 2 working groups
Preparing for the workshops
February 2008:

Workshops in Uganda

Held in the Ugandan schools
Evaluation
Presentation to the public (exhibition of the project)
March - April 2008 Preparation of workshops that will be held in Austrian schools
May or September 2008:

Workshops in Austria

Up to 4 Ugandan students come to Vienna for 4 weeks to do the same workshops together with the Austrian group in 3 Austrian schools. (To make that possible a lot of problems concerning the visas will have to be solved! We yet cannot guarantee that the workshops can be held in Austria, out of this reasons, but work on it with strong effort! That being said to avoid unexpected disappointments)
The Ugandan students will be hosted by the Austrian groupmembers. They cannot be students of the University of Applied Arts, because of our university law, but will be welcomed as guests by the university.
Public presentation of the project
Final evaluation
